BMC Production Process

BMC Production Process

  • 2018-06-26

Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) is a thermosetting composite molding material in bulk form of various inert fillers, fiber reinforcement, catalysts, stabilizers, and pigments. It is highly filled and reinforced with short fibers. Glass reinforcement represents between 10% and 30%, with glass length typically between 1/32-inch and 1/2-inch (12.5mm).
The chopped glass strands vary in length depending on the level of performance required. BMC uses a lower reinforcement content than SMC and permits higher filler loadings with lower costs.
BMC is available in a variety of standard and custom formulations, colors, and extrusions for compression, transfer, and injection molding. Typically, BMC is selected for its high strength-to-weight ratio at relatively low cost per cubic inch. Parts molded from BMC offer dimensional stability and retention of physical properties at high ambient temperatures.

With these characteristics, BMC can be evaluated to replace steel and die cast aluminum or iron.
